So, You’re Thinking About Martial Arts…
There is no doubt that martial arts are a fantastic way to get and stay in shape. For kids, there is nothing better for learning respect, self-control and building self-confidence. However, there are so many options to choose from. There are hard styles such as Karate and TaeKwon-do, soft styles such as Kung-Fu, Tai Chi, then there is Judo, Japanese Jujitsu, Brazilian Jujitsu, Aikido and the list goes on and on. So, how do you know what fits you? Let’s look at a few things you can do to make sure you choose the right school for you or your child.

  • April is National Kid Safe Month

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, approximately 258,000 children are abducted annually. Over three-quarters of all abductions are committed by family members, and another 22.5 percent are committed by non-familial acquaintances of the child. While less than 1 percent of abductions are committed by strangers, this is still a primary fear many parents have. But there are tools you can give your child to aid in the prevention of such a tragedy. Does your child know what to do if he or she is grabbed by a stranger? Do they understand basic self-defense techniques to break free, or how to alert others around them that he or she is in danger? April is ....

  • How Martial Arts Saved My Son from Bullies Without Him Ever Fighting

This post, by writer Patricia Salem,is sourced from fatherly.com and is used here with permission
How do I handle a child at elementary school who bullies my own child?

This is a tough one, and I’m sorry you and your child are going through this. My own son was bullied in elementary school, and I was heartbroken and shocked to find out that his teacher was actually encouraging and participating in it. I didn’t know until years later the depths of her insane behavior, or I would have taken legal action. I do know the teacher in question was let go the year after my son left her class. Anyway, I would first bring it to the attention of both the teacher and the ....

  • A New Tournament Experience

This post originally appeared at the Black Belts Pops website . Check him out for more great articles!
    Just Another Tournament?
Some of the tournament's youngest competitors I have been to and participated in many martial arts tournaments over the years. I consider them all successes no matter if I won anything or not. These tournaments have all been open or invitational formats. Outside of minor variations in events, some had breaking and self-defense options and some didn’t, they all had sparring and pattern events. On February 27, 2017, I had the opportunity to participate in an International TaeKwon-Do (ITF) tournament. This tournament, as in all the others ....

  • A Great Training Day

Not every martial arts instructor will invite other instructors in to instruct their students. I suppose they don’t like other roosters in their hen house. I am fortunate to train under an instructor (Master Jeremy Kempka at Premier Martial Arts in Mint Hill North Carolina) who does not feel that way. Today, we were honored to have Master Aaron Hensley in our Do-Jang to give us weapons training with the bo staff and the sword. Master Hensley is a 7-times world weapons champion and highly regarded in the world of martial arts. I was so impressed by Master Hensley. His qualifications and expertise were immediately evident and his teaching style exemplified the tenants of the ....

  • Why Self-Esteem Matters

According to KidsHealth.org when children feel good about themselves, it sets them up for success —in everything from school to friendships. Positive feelings like self-acceptance or self-confidence help kids try new challenges, cope with mistakes, and try again. Taking pride in their abilities and accomplishments helps kids do their best. By contrast, kids with low self-esteem might feel unsure of themselves. If they think others won't accept them, they may not participate as often. They may allow themselves to be treated poorly and have a hard time standing up for themselves. Kids who don't expect to do well may avoid challenges, give up easily, or be unable to bounce back from ....

  • Tournaments and Competitions - Should your Child Participate?

This post originally appeared on the Black Belt Pops blog and is used here with permission of the author. As your child trains in martial arts, it is inevitable that the opportunity to participate in tournament’s and competitions will arise. When these events are announced, it is inevitable that parents raise the question, “should my child participate?”It puzzles me a little bit as many of these children are already participating in something (soccer, basketball, etc). That being said, I would like to take some of the objections and concerns put forth by parents and put them “under the microscope”, if you will. Before I go on I want to state that I ....
